These scones are not only exceptionally easy to whip up but they also feature a brilliant combination of flavors that can energize your day. The coffee boost provided by espresso pairs beautifully with the semi-sweet chocolate, creating a mouthwatering experience that balances both sweetness and depth of flavor. Whether enjoyed alongside a cup of coffee or as a mid-afternoon treat, these scones promise to satisfy your cravings.
Ingredients You’ll Need: all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, butter, espresso, sour cream, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and powdered sugar.
Instructions:
Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. This base mix will provide structure and flavor to the scones.
Incorporate the Butter: Cut the cold butter into small chunks and add it to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter, mix until the butter is well incorporated, with small pea-sized pieces remaining.
Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, cold espresso, and sour cream until smooth.
Bring It All Together: Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the wet ingredients, adding in the chopped chocolate as well. Use a rubber spatula to fold the mixture together until it forms a cohesive dough. Be careful not to over-knead!
Chill the Dough: Shape the dough into a circle about 6.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes—a crucial step for achieving flaky scones.
Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Once the dough has chilled, cut it into 8 equal triangles and place them on the baking sheet.
Bake to Perfection: Bake the scones for about 15 minutes, or until they are lightly golden. Allow them to cool completely before adding the glaze.
While the scones cool, prepare the espresso glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and espresso until smooth. Once the scones have cooled, generously drizzle the glaze over the top and let it set.
Flavor and Texture Expect these scones to be a delightful balance of crispy and soft—crunchy on the outside with a tender, moist interior. The espresso adds a robust flavor that perfectly complements the sweetness of the chocolate, creating a harmony that is both satisfying and indulgent.
These Espresso Chip Scones are delicious on their own, but for an extra special treat, serve them with a dollop of clotted cream or a scoop of homemade whipped cream. Pair them with your favorite brew—whether it’s a classic cup of coffee, a latte, or even a chai tea—for the ultimate breakfast or afternoon snack experience.
If you’re searching for a fresh way to enjoy your coffee or wanting to impress your friends and family with something new, the Espresso Chip Scones are a fantastic choice. This recipe is simple enough for beginner bakers yet rewarding in flavor and presentation. Each bite is a blend of comfort and indulgence that’s perfect for any occasion. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Cut the butter into chunks and add it to the bowl. Using a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour mixture until the pieces are quite small.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, espresso, and sour cream. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, and pour the wet ingredients into the well. Don't forget to add in the chopped chocolate! Using a rubber spatula, start to fold the mixture together until the dough starts to come together. Turn the dough out onto some parchment paper or a clean surface, and lightly knead the dough until it just all comes together.
Form the dough into a circle that is about 6.5 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick. Cover the dough and let it rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400°F / 205°C. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Once the dough has rested, cut it into 8 equally sized triangles. Spread the triangles out evenly, and bake for 15 minutes. Let the scones cool completely before glazing them.
Espresso Glaze
Now let's make a delicious espresso glaze! In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and espresso. Equally distribute the glaze on top of each of the scones. Serve, and enjoy!
